Biography:
Melissa Ann Wilson was born in Ashland, Kentucky on September 8, 1954. Ms. Wilson earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1981 from the University of Kentucky. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1992 from the University of Kentucky as well. Ms. Wilson practiced nursing exclusively at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in a wide variety of leadership positions in both high risk pediatrics and high risk obstetrics. She managed a hospital wing and an outpatient clinic, was a helicopter transport team member, conducted clinical trials and published as a co-author, lectured, and assisted with marketing and public relations. While her practice primarily focused on drafting of policies and procedures and the teaching of standards of care to doctors and nurses through outreach education she also worked either in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, or Labor Hall once a week as a staff nurse. Working her way through the University of Kentucky School of Law as a nurse, Ms. Wilson completed law school in 1996 and was admitted to the Bar that same year.
While in law school Ms. Wilson was on the National Moot Court Team, Co-Chair of the Women’s Law Caucus, and a student advisor to the Dean. Ms. Wilson published “Your Practice and the Law: Terminating Life Support-Who Decides?” in the Association of Women’s Health Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses, Lifeline, Volume I, Number 3: June 1997. Currently she is a member of the Fayette County and Kentucky Bar Associations and the Kentucky Justice Association. She served as Chair of the Women’s Section of the Fayette County Bar Association in 2004, was seated on the Board of Governors for the Fayette County Bar Association 2006-2007 and is currently a Board member of the Central Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service. Practice areas include medical malpractice, insurance defense, products liability, municipal liability, general civil litigation, and family law.
Ms. Wilson is married to Richard A. Ford and their son Noah is five years old and their daughter Madison is three. She participates in group aerobics daily at lunch, works in her vegetable garden as often as possible, and reads contemporary fiction late into the night.
