Biography:
W. Bryan Hubbard was raised in the Virginia coalfield community of Lebanon, Virginia. He attended George Mason University from 1993 through 1997. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Politics, with distinction. He was active in George Mason University’s student government during his entire four-year course of study. He served as Chairman of George Mason’s Student Senate during his junior and senior years. Given his demonstrated leadership abilities, he was selected to serve as one of two student representatives on George Mason University’s Presidential Search Committee – a committee which ultimately selected George Mason University’s current President, Dr. Alan Merton. His activities as a student leader on campus garnered a front page story in the Washington Post in February 1996. He was covered in several subsequent articles in the paper’s City and Metro section between 1996 and his graduation in 1997. He was selected by the university to serve as the sole student speaker at the dedication of the school’s newest library, which, at the time, was the largest publicly funded construction project underway in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his junior and senior years, he was dispatched to speak before the Virginia General Assembly’s Joint House Appropriations, House Finance, and Senate Finance Committee regarding the university’s financial needs during the committee’s biennial budget deliberations. He was also selected to serve as a representative of the university community on a discussion panel for January 1996 edition ABC’s “Nightline” with Ted Koppel. Through a competitive selection process, he was chosen as George Mason’s lone student commencement speaker for its 1997 commencement ceremonies. On that occasion, he addressed a crowd of approximately 16,000.
As he wished to further his education within a locale much closer to his Appalachian roots, he chose to attend the University of Kentucky College of Law where he enrolled in the fall of 1997. During his first year, he was given an award for “Best Oral Argument” within the college’s Swinford Writing Club. During his second year, he tried out for and became a member of the college’s Moot Court Board. He served as President of the Moot Court Board during his third year and at the conclusion of the academic year, was selected as the Board’s “Most Outstanding Member” by his peers.
W. Bryan Hubbard began working for Ward, Hocker & Thornton, PLLC as an associate in May 2001. He became a partner in January 2007. He works within the field of insurance defense litigation, with a specific focus on workers’ compensation defense. He has given seminars on Kentucky workers’ compensation law to clients throughout the Southeast United States, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, and Texas.
Mr. Hubbard resides in Lexington, Kentucky, with his wife and young daughter. He recently worked as an editorial columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky’s second largest newspaper, and submitted monthly columns during the year 2007. He continues to be published by the paper on a per submission basis. Mr. Hubbard is a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and is engaged in various community and civic activities throughout the Central Kentucky area.
